The Rise of Crossplay Minecraft Servers in 2026

Bedrock and Java finally share servers seamlessly. Here's what that means for players and the networks leading the charge.

For a decade, Minecraft's Java and Bedrock editions were completely separate universes. Different servers, different plugins, different communities. That's finally changing. In 2026, crossplay is the default assumption for new networks — and existing networks are scrambling to catch up.

What Enabled Crossplay

Geyser and Floodgate — open-source projects that let Bedrock clients connect to Java servers — have matured to the point where crossplay "just works." Combined with ViaVersion for version compatibility, servers can now accept players from Minecraft: Java Edition, Bedrock Edition (mobile, console, Windows 10), and even old client versions all at once.

Who's Doing It Best

CubeCraft pioneered large-scale crossplay years ago and remains the gold standard. Mineville and PikaNetwork built their entire identities around crossplay. Hypixel has slowly rolled out crossplay for a few of its minigames but hasn't committed network-wide. Most new servers launching in 2026 assume crossplay from day one.

What It Means for Players

You can play with friends who only own Xbox. You can play from your phone on the bus and your PC at home on the same account and server. The audience pool for any given server is now 3-5x larger than it used to be, which means more populated servers even for niche gamemodes.

What It Means for Server Owners

Crossplay is no longer optional for competitive networks. If you're not supporting Bedrock players, you're cutting yourself off from half your potential audience. Setting it up with Geyser + Floodgate is actually easy — the harder part is making sure your plugins and resource packs work for both editions.

Some Caveats

Bedrock players have slightly different combat mechanics and inventory handling. PvP servers still struggle with perfect parity. Resource packs work differently between editions. And there's a small but vocal group of Java purists who hate sharing servers with Bedrock users — moderation still matters.
